Caring for skin with vitiligo in winter

Since the cold weather accelerates dehydration of the skin, winter requires extra care, especially for people with vitiligo.

In the case of vitiligo patients is important to maximise external hydration (with the frequent application of moisturisers, body and facial creams) as well as internal (through fluid intake; it is recommended to drink about 2.5 litres of water per day).

Another way to care for skin dehydration, which is enhanced in winter due to the imbalance of body temperature, is to use of soaps and hygiene products that are pH neutral, as they are less aggressive to the skin.

Sunscreen should also not be forgotten in winter, especially when practicing outdoor sports and more especially in the snow. People with vitiligo must use factor 30 or more sunscreen; apply it half an hour before sun exposure and re-apply every two hours.

In winter, as in the rest of the year, it is important to maintain a good diet (rich in antioxidants and vitamins), play sports regularly and avoid stressful situations.
